Ausgangsbasis dieser Ausstellung sind drei fast identische Selbstbau-Bücherregale. Die drei teilnehmenden Künstler Anna Gollwitzer, Oliver Oefelein und Frans van Tartwijk verwendeten einzelne Teile der Bücherregale und kombinierten diese mit neuen Elementen und Materialien. Die Anregung zum Konzept wurde im Internet gefunden: Bauanleitungen für Do It Yourself- Möbel, die Möglichkeiten aufzeigen, wie Schränke, Betten oder Bücherregale auf verschiedene (und überraschende) Art und Weise montiert werden können um neue Funktionen und Erscheinungsweisen zu entwickeln.

Die in der Ausstellung verwendeten Bücherregale sind einfach im Design und als Bestandteile allgemeiner Inneneinrichtung sofort wiedererkennbar. Sie tauchen in unzähligen Wohnungen und Räumen auf und können als demokratische Designs bezeichnet werden, die die Kulisse des modernen Lebens formen. Die Arbeiten in der Ausstellung erscheinen als Mutationen im Produktionsprozess moderner, bezahlbarer Möbel. Ihrer Funktion beraubt und als Möbelstück nutzlos, verwandeln sie sich als Kunstwerke erneut zu Objekten der Begierde.

Die drei künstlerischen Neuinterpretationen des Regalklassikers sind variantenreich:


Anna Gollwitzer
"Die Schreibstube der Anna O (known as: Bertha Pappenheim)
Skulptur, mehrteilig

Anna Gollwitzer zeigt eine für die Ausstellung entwickelte Skulptur, bestehend aus:
Billyregal, Rehtisch, Holzstuhl (dänisches Design ohne Sitzfläche), Malervlies grau gemustert, Distanzleiste mit Griff, Drahtlinien, Birkenstammteile, ein Stück Zierleiste,
Flugholzplatte, Hanfseil, Gummiband, Metallturner, Schleifpapier, Buchenast

Oliver Oefelein
" Der verpackte Vorhang"
In seinen dreidimensionalen Arbeiten erforscht Oliver Oefelein die Grenzen des Sichtbaren und Greifbaren. Er entwickelt weiche und gleichzeitig sehr dynamische Formen, die aus blauen Styropor und transparenten Tesafilm ausgeschnitten werden. Die Präsenz dieser Objekte steht in einem starken Kontrast zu ihrem Mangel an Funktion.
Seine Arbeiten sind ebenso sinnlich wie abstrakt. Für die Ausstellung hat Oefelein die Verpackungen für fiktive Ikeaprodukte entworfen.

Frans van Tartwijk
Frans van Tartwijk befestigt teilweise abgesägte Bücherregale an der Wand und kombiniert diese mit einer Anzahl kleiner Bilder auf farbigen Papier. Auf den Bildern sind Menschen zu sehen. Frans van Tartwijk malt vertraute Szenen und Situationen, die mit einer absurden Theatralik an den Betrachter herantreten. Im Zusammenspiel mit diesen Arbeiten erscheint das Muster der Regalstücke an der Wand als vereinfachter Stadtplan oder als Storyboard.

Starting point of this exhibition are three almost identical build-it-yourself bookshelves. The three participating artists, Anna Gollwitzer, Oliver Oefelein and Frans van Tartwijk were asked to use these pieces of furniture and turn these into art works. The artists used the separate parts of the bookshelves and combined these with new elements and materials.

The idea was inspired by the combinations for such "shopping-furniture", found on the Internet, in which cupboards, beds or bookshelves are assembled in alternative and surprising ways, creating new functions and appearances.

The bookshelves used in the exhibition are very simple in design and recognisable to all as part of all sorts of interiors. These bookshelves appear in many homes and rooms and can be defined as democratic design. One could say such furniture forms the backdrop of modern life. The works in the exhibition can be seen as mutations in the genetic fabric of modern affordable furniture. The bookshelves in the exhibition are useless as furniture but surprising as works of art and, in that sense, have been transformed into new objects of desire.

Oliver Oefelein
" The packaged drapery "
Oliver Oefelein explores the limits of visibility and tangibility in his three dimensional works. He specializes in 'soft' and at the same time dynamic forms, cut from blue Styrofoam and transparent beams of 'tesafilm' tape.
The presence of these objects forms a strange contrast with their lack of function.
His works are equally sensual as they are abstract. For the "Billy combines" exhibition Oefelein has constructed external packaging for fictitious Ikea-like products. Bookshelves and packaging together are the work, which is surreal and simulates a real packaged product.

Frans van Tartwijk
Frans van Tartwijk has combined a number of small paintings on coloured paper with a pattern of partly cut-up bookshelves, fixed onto the walls. The paintings are pictures of people. As in most of van Tartwijks artworks, he has painted intimate scenes with a theatrical and absurd feel to it. In combination with these works the pattern of wooden parts can be interpreted as a simplified city-plan or as a storyboard.
